Welcome Professors! This section has recently been added to help professors spread the word to their students about the importance and benefits of participating in the Korea-America Student Conference!

The 3rd Korea-America Student Conference (KASC) will be held in July 2010! Students from all majors are encouraged to apply as English is the primary language of the conference, and KASC does not require students to be Asian studies majors or studying the Korean language.

Below is the basic information for the conference and a list of frequently asked questions. There is also a link to our 3rd KASC brochure for you to hand out to interested students.

KASC encourages open dialogue on some of the most prominent issues facing these two coutnries including but not limited to Environmental Policy, National Security, Global Citizenship, Science and Technology, and the Media. The insight gained from these interactions and the shared experiences created during the course of this conference will be invaluable to this next generation of leaders.

KASC is also uniquely student-run, giving the participants high quality real world experience that will prepare them for successful careers in any sector.

Cost: The $3,000 participation for KASC covers food, lodging, and group travel for the duration of the Conference. Travel between each site is included in this fee. However, individual round-trip transportation to and from the Orientation site is the responsibility of each delegate.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

Are Scholarships or Financial Aid Available?

Yes! Each year a considerable number of American delegates receive full or partial financial support from their universities or other organizations. Upon selection, ISC and the student Executive Committee can provide advice for locating and obtaining scholarships, donations and other forms of financial aid.

What are some common KASC activities?

  • Pre-Conference Preparation

Preparation begins once delegates send in their acceptance to the conference. All delegates are required to write and present a research paper on a topic relevant to their roundtable topic. As in-person meetings before the actual conference are difficult due to geographical differences, roundtable leaders encourage delegates to participate in online meetings, get to know their roundtable members, and play an active role in constructing the roundtable format.

  • Roundtable Discussions (RT)

The Conference is centered on the activities of the five roundtables in which delegates participate in intense discussions to analyze their opinions and develop real world solutions. There will also be opportunities to meet various specialists, leaders, and professors as well as relevant site visits during the month of meetings.

  • Special Topics (ST)

Different from the roundtable topics, delegates partake in smaller discussion groups led by the delegates themselves. These informal sessions help to create a foundation for mutual understanding, social awareness, cultural sensitivity, and exchange of ideas. Selection of special topics is left to the minds of the delegates in order to best promote an environment where one can pursue subjects of interest.

  • Conference Wide Reflection (CWR)

Usually held at the end of each site, all delegates gather to freely share their thoughts and concerns in regard to the conference. Through open dialogue between the delegates and the Executive Committee members, the conference is able to adapt to the functional needs of the delegates.

  • Final Forum

In addition to each overarching theme of the conference, we invite professors and leaders from various fields of study to give lectures and panel discussions with delegates. In doing so, delegates are able to learn more from the specialists and expand their academic knowledge about a variety of topics. The forums and discussions are often led by our roundtable groups, thus presenting the unique views of students to the audience members.

At our Final Form held at the last site, all roundtables present the results of their month-long discussion as well as a summary of the entire conference. All of our forums are open and publicized to the general public.

  • Homestay

Besides the KASC discussions and activities, delegates also participate in a homestay. Paired with two or three of their fellow KASCers, this opportunity provides the chance for the delegates to bond amongst themselves, interact with members of the local community, and learn more about them while sharing their own thoughts and experiences as well.

  • Post-KASC

The KASC experience does not end with the month long conference. Delegates frequently continue to keep in touch with each other, often maintaining the friendship throughout their entire life. Both the Korea and the U.S. side create conference report booklets, which include summaries of forums, discussions, photos, and final messages to each other.

Can my students receive academic credit for KASC?

International Student Conferences is not an accredited institution. However, we are willing to support any student interested in using the KASC experience for independent study by completing any necessary paperwork.
